Kār Nāṟpatu
Forty on the Rains · Forty akam poems of the mullai season
Forty akam love poems on the kār (rainy) season by Matturai Marutaṉ Iḷanākaṉār, from the Patiṉeṇkīḻkaṇakku anthology. In the classical Tamil akam grammar, the kār season belongs to the mullai tiṇai — the forest landscape of waiting and reunion. The rains are not merely weather: they are the signal of the beloved's return, the promise kept by the season.
Unlike the longer Sangam anthologies (Aiṅkuṟunūṟu, Akanaṉūṟu), Kār Nāṟpatu is entirely devoted to a single season. All forty poems speak from and to the rains: the heroine waiting, the friend reassuring, the hero hastening home, the reunion achieved — a complete emotional arc in forty voices.
